How to Cool the Planet One Garden at a Time

The October meeting of Roleystone Organic Growers will be all about how to turn your lawn into a native garden that requires very little water and that is environmentally friendly. Nancy Scade will show us how to get rid of your lawn using solarisation and landscape it properly with Australian native plants. Having a native garden has many benefits for the environment: it creates a wildlife corridor, absorbs carbon, uses very little water once established, and if planted wisely doesn't require much energy to maintain.

Nancy, from Australian Native Nursery in Oakford will be our guest speaker. Nancy has a degree in Environmental Science, has 16 years of experience in the native wholesale, 6 years in the retail plant business, and has been involved in Landcare for 20 years, so she really knows what she is talking about!

The meeting will be on Wed. October 8th @ 7:30pm at the Roleystone Family Centre in Wygonda Rd. Cost is $3. Enquiries to Lisa 9399 2312

August notes from the Roleystone organic growers...

Hi Everyone,

Another great talk and lesson from Chris! We all will be able to Ph test, know the type of particles that should make up good organic soil ( he's a sweetie sticking to the organics!) and be able to home test the rate of absorption of our soils, etc . I learned a new word-adsorption (The process by which molecules of a substance, such as a gas or a liquid, collect on the surface of another substance, such as a solid. The molecules are attracted to the surface but do not enter the solid's minute spaces as in absorption. We don't want adsorption!) if you would like to contact Chris for a property visit, his contact is as 9397-5686 or
0422 521 434

Thanks to everyone who helped at the meeting-it was really appreciated. My foot should be a lot better next month!!

For those that are OGAWA members-membership cards will be sent in the coming weeks, as they are combining the mailout with other info.

Many thanks to Violeta for the free raffle donation of some yummy items from her new shop in Pioneer Village. If you haven't had a look at the shop, it is really worth a look in! Break ins

Just quick note to Bedfordale residents, I noticed on page 4 of The Comment News there was a report of a break in on Wallangarra Dr. We don't usually get much crime up this way so it's probably worth keeping your eyes open if you see anything unusual.

DOG ATTACKS IN BUNGADORE PARK

There have been reports of owners letting their dogs off their leads in the park. This has resulted in attacks on people running and jogging through the park. These incidents have been reported to the Council and the ranger is looking into it. Owners need to be reminded that their dogs are required to be kept on leads and under control at all times.

ARMADALE SETTLERS COMMON

NEW APPOINTMENTS
As previously outlined, all Advisory/Management Committees of Council are opened for new appointments following Council elections each two years. Council has made appointments to the Armadale Settlers Common Management Committee and I am pleased to welcome two new members – Jacqui Thomas and David Ward. Both will bring a high degree of enthusiasm and their own expertise to the Committee. Previous members who re-nominated are to continue as very valuable team members. The Committee contains members with a diverse range of skills and we are lucky to have a very balance team.
We do have a couple of vacancies available if anyone wishes to join us. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact me on telephone 9497 3469

DIEBACK FUNDING
Funding has been acquired to further develop dieback stations in the Settlers Common.
The purpose of the dieback stations is to provide facilities for walkers to brush-down their footwear in order to contain the spread of dieback throughout the reserve. The new funding will provide stations within the eastern portion of the Settlers Common.. It is important that we all assist in the attempts to contain dieback. All those using the Common are requested to stop for a minute or two, use the seats and brushesprovided and brush down your footwear.
The positive step of cleaning our footwear will have an ongoing impact in reducing the spread of dieback. Please help.

WALK TRAIL FUNDING
Council is to embark on improving access to the eastern portion of the Settlers Common
and Churchman Bushland in the vicinity of Churchman Brook Road. Also, additional
interpretive trails are planned in the Settlers Common. The provision of wheelchair access
is seen as an important part of this project. More information on this project will be
provided when at hand. An existing dieback hygiene station
in Armadale Settlers Common Reserve.

Bedfordale Volunteer Fire Brigade

Well done to the residents of Bedfordale, we have had a quiet fire season so far in Bedfordale with only 5 small fires, most already controlled by you the residents by the time we arrived. Your vigilence in spotting and reporting these fires have been great. Keep up the good work and with luck we can continue this trend. Only one of these fires had a clear staring point with power lines down in carradine road, the rest were unknown so continue your vigilence.

The Brigade has been out of the area to some of the big fires, Parkerville early this month and Mandogalup - Thomas rd last month. The crews attending these reported many unprepared properties in both areas. They really need a good BRAG programme like we have in bedfordale to show them how to prepare their properties as we do here. We never send both of our vehicles to these fires, we always have one ready to go to your help if we have a call in Bedfordale. Keep up the good work and we will finish the season as quiet as we have started it. The product “ Killfire” is available at Armadale stock feeds, South West Hwy. We are still trialing the product successfully.

Date to remember Saturday 8th March - the Annual BBQ for Residents and Fire Brigade.
Anyone needing more info on the BRAG programme can ring me.

TRAFFIC LIGHTS – BEDFORDALE HILL ROAD & SW HWY
Main Roads WA‘s confidence that the traffic lights would be finished before Christmas 2007 was misplaced. As of mid January I have been unable to ascertain when we can expect this project to be completed...

CONCERTS IN THE PARK
The series of Concerts in the Park commence at Minnawarra Park from the 3rd of February at 6.00pm. Why not bring along a fold-up chair or a blanket and sit on the lawn with a picnic and enjoy the free concert with your family and friends. The Rushton Park venue will also be used for the concerts that will run through February and early March. Watch the local newspapers for further details or contact the City on 9399 0111.

WALK TRAIL UPGRADE
The City is planning to use monies derived from Public Open Space Trust funds (derived from cash-in-lieu of public open space provision) to provide improved walk trails in the vicinity of Churchman Brook Road and in the eastern portion of the Armadale Settlers Common.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either of us.
